Sub-Surface Drip Irrigation (SDI)

Sub-surface drip irrigation is a low-volume irrigation system where drip lines are installed below the soil surface, usually 2"–6" deep (lawns) or 6"–12" deep (beds). Water is delivered slowly and directly to the root zone, minimizing evaporation and surface runoff.

Key Benefits

1. Extremely Water-Efficient

  • Up to 30–50% less water used compared to sprinklers.
  • No evaporation or wind drift.
  • Water goes directly to the root zone.
  • 2. No Surface Spray

  • Safe for pathways, buildings, windows.
  • No overspray onto sidewalks or hardscape.
  • Trip-hazards are eliminated because there are no heads.
  • 3. Uniform Watering

  • Delivers consistent moisture across the entire zone.
  • Ideal for slopes or oddly shaped areas.
  • 4. Healthier Root Development

  • Encourages deep rooting.
  • Reduces fungal disease because foliage stays dry.
  • 5. Works Under Most Surfaces (SDI can be installed under):

  • Lawns
  • Groundcover beds
  • Shrub/planting beds
  • Important Considerations:

    1. Not ideal for annual beds
If beds are frequently dug or changed, drip lines may get damaged.

    2. Harder to repair
Repairs require digging to access the tubing. (However, SDI is much less likely to be damaged compared to sprinklers.)

    3. Proper filtration is mandatory – ESPECIALLY in Osoyoos
A 150–200 mesh filter is required to avoid emitter clogging.

    4. Rodent issues
In some areas, underground rodents can chew drip line. Not common in urban landscapes but possible.

    Where SDI Works Best

    ✔ Residential Lawns
    ✔ Commercial Turf
✔ Slopes that are hard to irrigate
    ✔ Xeriscape Landscapes
✔ Areas where sprinklers overspray onto:
     • Roads
     • Sidewalks
     • Buildings
     • Neighbouring properties
    ✔ High-efficiency or water-restricted landscapes
